Mrs Smith Reads What You See in the Dark by Manuel Muñoz, CBR3 #14

I’m just going to say up front, that this is probably the best book I will read this year. For me, it hit every note, pitch perfect.

In 1962 a very well-known director changed the movies forever with a black & white film that even today has the power to make a first-time viewer’s blood run cold. What You See in the Dark, by Manuel Muñoz weaves together a story about a then, little-known actress and the director of that movie, as they navigate the creation of a unique cinematic moment within that film, in tandem with a fly-on-the-wall observation of the smaller lives of the inhabitants of Bakersfield, California where the director scouted for his creepy hotel location and the long desolate highways that would stand in for the outskirts of Phoenix, Arizona.
