xoxoxoe, #31, Beneath the Dune, by Walter Ramsay, #CBR3

I had hopes for a mystery that mixed both the shores of New Jersey and southern Forida, but alas, this was not the book. Here is an excerpt from my review of my #31 book, Beneath the Dune, by Walter Ramsay, on my blog, xoxoxo e:

Interspersed with Tucker’s misogynistic ramblings is a murder mystery and a ghost story, both told in the third person, with a completely different tone from Tucker’s smart-alecky delivery.

Ramsay is ambitious to try to combine a story involving a past murder with a present one — and to have his reporter-hero try to piece it all together. The plot elements in Beneath the Dune are good: a man communicating with a dead ancestor, Seminole Indians, New Jersey, a Civil War era romance, a murder mystery. The disparate parts just never did quite come together. I preferred the past/dream sequences to Tucker’s endless monologues.

Wow, if you read the book, Seminole Indians are not from or ever mentioned in the novel as being from New Jersey. When a person reviews a book, he/she should try and get the facts correct. Credibility as a reviewer now is questioned.

  2. I should have written, “Seminole Indians, New Jersey, a Civil War era romance …” Thanks for catching the typo. I had hope for all those different elements coming together in an exciting way and they didn’t for me.
