Clementine Bojangles CBR-III Review #98: The Sweetest Thing by Christina Mandelski

A review of Christina Mandelski’s The Sweetest Thing, a tender coming-of-age novel about a girl in search of her mother (and herself), can be found at my blog here.

What works in Mandelski’s book is her (rather daring) choice to create a largely unsympathetic main character, her attention to detail with regard to cake decorating, and the prickly relationship between the main character and her father.  What doesn’t is the book’s central emotional drama: the absent mother.
